Homemade Soup To Warm You

“You  can do almost anything with soup stock, it’s like a strong foundation. When you  have the right foundation, everything tastes good.”

– Martin  Yan

It didn’t feel cold here in Southern California until this week.

Time for some homemade soup to warm you!

A cold snap has streaked through our otherwise rather pleasant sweatshirt over tank top weather. When it gets too cold for flip flops, the weather has my full attention. Snow is my mortal enemy so when there is a thick frost on my windshield, I glare suspiciously at it, decide to burrow back into my nest and happily stay there until the sunshine chases the evil chill back at bay.

When its cold outside there is nothing like a big steaming hot bowl of fresh homemade soup to warm you from the inside out.

If I had to pick one type of food to eat for the rest of my life, I’d be torn between soup or salad. Both have such rich variety and can be very nutritious. Since its cold, I’m going to have to go with the hot and savory soup choice.

Bust out the thick crusty French bread, Baguette or dipping edible food utensil of your choice.

Editable Food Utensil?

Yes that’s what I said.

20 Bonus points if you understand my nutty.

You’ll have to excuse me… my brain is starting to grow icicles and freeze over.

Since friends don’t let friends frost over and freeze solid, let’s get warmed up with some homemade soups!

Here’s a collection of some of our favorite homemade soups…

Rainy Day Soup– Made the most often around here. You can add or subtract what you wish for a soup that cleans out the veggie drawer in the fridge or as easy as opening a few cans.

Italian Sausage Soup– It might sound like it would be a very involved soup… guess again. This is as easy as it is tasty. Not a drop with be left when you’re done!

Cheater Chicken Noodle Soup– Cheap and easy soup that even a new cook can knock outta the park.

Funny Bunny Soup– no rabbits were harmed in the making of this soup and can easily is made vegetarian.

Taco Soup– An old family favorite! It adds just the right spice to your family dinner that everyone will enjoy!

Crock Pot Vegetable Beef Soup– Prep ahead of time, freeze and then toss it in the Crock Pot and let it work its magic for you.

Tomato Butternut Basil Soup– Complete with a story of how I got caught but my pants down wearing soup because doesn’t every recipe need to involve public embarrassment, right?

If you’ve had it with savory and want a little something sweet, I added recipes for several Chilled Fruit Soups that we make most during the summer heat but they are still exceptional year round. They really are fun and have been a hit with all ages.

Soups are a great hot and hearty way to stretch the family budget while never skimping on health or flavor.

I love the way a simmering soup slowly drifts through the house until every corner has been touched by its comforting blanket of savory spices inviting everyone to gather around the table long before it’s completed.

Soup has a gravitational pull around here.

Everyone lurks around the kitchen until they learn the time in which the awesome contents of the pot will be ready to gobble up. Someone pulls out a board game. Giggles and compromises are heard. By the time its done everyone is there, playing, talking together and waiting for me to dish up today’s creation.

What’s your favorite homemade soup to warm you?

Feeling Frosty,

Meg xoxo

  1. What a bounty of good soup recipes! We’re having homemade soup for dinner tonight too. I make a ton of tomato sauce (well, more like very thick V-8 juice) every summer and enjoy it during the cold spells. Since it was in the minus temps here today, beef/tomato/pasta soup is on the menu. I love your Italian Sausage soup!
