Cash For Trash

Benjamin Franklin said there were only two things certain in life: death and taxes. But I’d like to add a third certainty: trash. And while some in this room might want to discuss reducing taxes, I want to talk about reducing trash.

-Ruth Ann Minner

There are so very many ways to earn cash for trash!

Recycling bottles and cans to gets the deposit back is a great way to keep it earth friendly and put a little green back into your wallet.

Most people don’t think about it but when you get a new appliance installed in your home, like a washer, dishwasher, oven, etc. how many have paid a small fee to have the old non- working appliance removed?

I paid Sears $10 on two different occasions to remove an old appliance before I got wise.

Not only did I pay them to pick it up but then they turn around and recycled my appliance and made another $20- $45 off of it. Now we take it ourselves, haul friends dead stuff to the recycling plant and if we didn’t have the means to transport it, I’d happily call a friend with a truck that could use the extra cash.

Hey Pal. Wanna make $40 and do me a really big favor this week?

Heck yeah, that’s easy.

Just another way to make a little extra cash for trash.

Several years ago the kids and I went out to visit a friend’s new house at the beach.

The only thing new about it was the names on the mortgage.

It was a MAJOR fixer upper but they had big plans and they were just steps from the ocean. The living room and downstairs bathroom were under construction on the weekends but we were there to play in the sand.

After a wonderful day at the beach, all the kids were settled in watching a movie while us ladies left them with the men to walk up the road to grab the pizza.

Outside the liquor store she paused and picked something up.

It was a lottery scratcher ticket.

I razzed her about tucking the ticket into her pocket. She told me that she picks them up when she sees them and enters the discarded ticket in the second chance lotto.

I laughed at her. I might have cracked a few cheap jokes but eh, could be something.

Seven months later her random picking up tickets habit paid off.

I can’t remember how much she won but they hired someone to finish off the house, paid off debt, bought a new car and set up college funds for the kids.

Still the same humble surf bums that live by the beach as they were before.

The Handsome Prince and I have been picking up discarded tickets and entering them for a long time now.

I don’t go rummaging in the trash my friends.

I find them all the time in parking lots, outside the market, 7-11, gas stations, etc.

It’s not like I’m not this fixated hunt but I am that goofy person who’s scored some pretty sweet lucky finds of awesome coupons in parking lots or shopping carts in the return.

Wow. I kinda sound like I should be shuffling down the sidewalk singing show tunes, eh?

What does it hurt?

If I told you that all you had to do to possibly win $10,000 + dollars is stoop down and pick up a piece of trash.

That’s a pretty Bomb Diggity piece of trash my friends!

What if it paid you a cool million bucks?

Would you remember to donate to the insanity of the Nut that told you to do it?

Ahem… Mama needs a vacation… good karma my friends, good karma points. 😉

I personally don’t have the money to waste purchasing scratchers but I certainly don’t mind picking them up for the chance to win when someone decides to be a litter bug.

Not $1 spent!

I didn’t have to spend the $2 to win, maybe.

I didn’t have to spend the $5 for a chance for something wonderful.

How about $10? Na pass. I’ll wait to find it later on and save my cash for a rainy day.

Think of it as a fun game.

A nifty public service YOU provide.

If you see it pick it up. If it’s trash, find a can and high five for doing your part to keep this a beautiful place to live.

Recycle or get it to the right can that will.

If it’s a coupon, keep it, use it. If you can’t, won’t and don’t have someone who would want it, stash it on the shelf near the item listed on the coupon. Someone will be thrilled when they go in for their dog treats and find that a coupon fairy gave them .65 cents off!

Every way that you can think to generate cash for trash is pretty dang awesome in my book!

They say you have to play to win.

No one said anything about having to pay. 😉

Be smart. Do the world a favor. Try your luck at winning.

Pretty cool.

Feelin’ Lucky,

Meg xoxo

Wow. Do all scratch tickets have the second chance draw? I have never heard of the before!

ALL of them here in California do. 🙂 I have friends in Arizona, New York & Colorado that play the second chance lotto too so I would think that most states or many of them at least would have some type of second chance lotto.

  2. This is a very nice idea. Cash for trash. And if you’re lucky enough with those games you might be able to get more out of you’re trash.
