A Day Of Trekking Outdoors

“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity…”
~John Muir

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALuc and I met some awesome friends for a day of hiking in Malibu Creek State Park.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAs you wander down the paths, you can’t help but feel like you know this place.

So much of this park has appeared in television and movies going back several decades.

Chances are pretty good that you’ve seen this park more times than you were aware.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADid you know that these mountains are critical to our rapidly dwindling mountain lion population?

They are important too and we need to always respect their beautiful open space when we visit.

You will remember these rocks…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt is still an active place for filming.

Today, we stumbled upon a student film being made.

There was a lady in the water filming the couple taking direction from the man on the shore.

The magic of Hollywood, folks. :)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe took a path less traveled, went up a mountain and the view was so worth the effort.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe lake is so peaceful.

It is hard to believe that we are just a few miles from busy cities.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe geology of this area is diverse and so beautiful.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAM*A*S*H was filmed here too.

It was fun to pull out the old VHS and watch the show.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA*Fun Fact:

When the Handsome Prince was young, he attended a summer camp in these mountains and rode horses right here every summer. They used to dive off the rocks at the waterfall.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAYou all know that I’m a HUGE old movie fan.

Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is one of my favorites and it just so happens that it was filmed here too!

Mr. Blandings dream house has been changed and now serves as the visitors center but when you peek in the front window, the living room is exactly like the movie.

I might have gotten a little more excited about this fact than the average person.

Okay, there may have been a bit of squealing too.

I can help it, my inner nerd was thrilled beyond measure.

The house then and now.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhen California isn’t experiencing a wicked drought, this would usually be a sweet little river that we would float down on rafts, way back when I was in high school.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAA day of trekking outdoors in the company of wonderful, dear people could not be spent any better.

Be smart when you go to the mountains.

Bring a buddy or two, pack plenty of water, wear sunscreen, wear sturdy shoes/hat, be aware of the wildlife in the area, stay on the trail and take all of your trash with you.

If you stay on trail, it will decrease your chances of encountering poisonous plants, ticks, dangerous reptiles/ animals and getting lost. When you hike smart, you have an enjoyable experience and develop a life long love of the outdoors.
